7th and 8th Grade NJHS students had the chance to volunteer at a local food pantry, Helping Hands Pantry. 15 students showed up ready to spend their Saturday morning giving back to others. Students had a great time serving others, even when it started to pour down rain.

Results from 2021 FSA testing have just come in and the DAS Tigers really showed their stripes! We are so proud of the hard work that our students and teachers put in during the 2020 - 2021 school year. It was a year unlike any other but the DAS family pushed through and made sure that the learning continued. Congratulations DAS on truly excellent FSA scores!

Math (Grades 3 - 8)

DAS Tigers shined on their Math scores! All grades performed better than the district, state, and charter average. 89% of our 7th graders earned a Level 3 or above. This was the 2nd highest score out of 39 schools in Pinellas County. 78% of DAS students in all testing grades earned a Level 3 or above. Way to go Tigers!

Congratulations to our classroom spelling bee winners! These students will compete in our school level spelling bee on December 19. We will have one winner and one runner-up. The winner will represent Discovery Academy of Science in the local spelling bee in Haines City Florida in February.

Congratulations to Discovery Academy of Science Olympiad Team. Awesome Job 😊😊
DAS Tigers competed at 2018 regional Science Olympiad competition at Hillsborough Community College, Brandon FL on Saturday, February 3rd 2018. They have received several placements.

Students in grades 5th through 7th competed in the Southwest Florida Regional SeaPerch Competition last March. Since August, the D.A.S. SeaPerch Club met twice per week to design, build, and test their underwater robots in preparation for this competition. One of the teams finished in 2nd place and made it very close to qualifying for the National Competition. D.A.S. will also have numerous teams competing in the 2019 Regional Competition this year.

SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students with the resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) in an in-school or out-of-school setting. Students build the ROV from a kit comprised of low-cost, easily accessible parts, following a curriculum that teaches basic engineering and science concepts with a marine engineering theme. The SeaPerch Program provides students with the opportunity to learn about robotics, engineering, science, and mathematics (STEM) while building an underwater ROV as part of a science and engineering technology curriculum. Throughout the project, students will learn engineering concepts, problem-solving, teamwork, and technical applications.

Building a SeaPerch ROV teaches basic skills in ship and submarine design and encourages students to explore naval architecture and marine and ocean engineering principles. Students learn important engineering and design skills and are exposed to all the exciting careers that are possible in naval architecture and naval, ocean, and marine engineering.
